I find it interesting that I am hearing typewriter sounds used as percussion in some new music - Looper, The White Stripes- since typewriters are pretty much defunct. I think it is quite lovely... a comforting meditative kind of sound. It makes me think of my grandma a little bit ( she is the only one I know who still uses a typewriter). Has any one eles heard typewriters in new music? What if anything do you think it means?

Looper does a number called "Impossiable Things up a Tree" and The White Stripes track is "Sugar Never Tasted so Sweet". I am not certain that the White Stripes is a typewriter but it sounds a lot like it.
I am find that I am often drawn to the ressurection of "artifacts".
I think that they give us a measure of comfort.
I guess it stems from the whole sampling craze that is so popular in music these days but I think that the typewriter stuff has a little more originality since it crosses diciplines literature/music.

The spell checker doesn't seem to want to work for me so my appologies for any miss-spellings.

Oh.. I cant spell either.. so dont worry.

I like your point about the typewritter merging the bounds of music/literature.

Hey this is funny... cuz i just sampled a typewriter a week or two ago... for use in more crazyness should I decide i want it. He he he.... interesting. I am also a fan of "found sounds." I want to buy a cheap yamha digital drum toy with midi I/O and trigger samples with it... of found sounds. Anyway... whatever.

I built an entire song out of telephone noise samples (internet connection sounds, dial tones, beeps and pulses). I guess telephones are more high tech and less nostalgic though.
